Again the German Heritage Commission would like to suggest to the City Council that the Hotel Bed Tax refund from the state include setting aside into a special fund which would go for the remodeling of the Pioneer Pavilion at Lady Bird Park. The remodeling plans were completed some years ago which included air conditioning, enlarging from both sides which would include 650 seating for convenings as well as roll out walls so that there would be at least three separate group or lecture areas. Two statewide meetings including the Saengerfest could then be held there on a regular basis; which is now not possible anywhere in Fredericksburg at one location, a required condition to get the meeting. The City Council almost approved the project awhile back but was stopped by one vote. At least we should start an escrow fund from the bed tax; and then by some stroke of luck a generous soul might come up with the rest if we used his or her name on the building….. Dankeschoen! Keep up the good work.

    Tom,

When council deliberates over the priorities for the Parks bonds, please consider what the Fredericksburg Comprehensive Plan (see it online on the city’s website) said: When the population rose to 10 to 12,000, there should be a focus on: acquiring and developing land area for community/neighborhood parks for the 11 sub-areas of Fredericksburg (especially the under-served SW, SE and NW part of Fredericksburg), develop walking trails, more swimming pool space, more soccer fields and creek-side preservation.

The present plan is a start but it’s a band-aid, just kicking the can down the street. We need to implement a plan now to make the recommendations from 14 years ago a reality. Otherwise the Comprehensive Plan was just a big waste of time.
